In the decade following the conclusion of the Civil War, Homer painted several images of African Americans, including this one. The monarch butterfly on the boy's shoulder serves as a symbol of freedom and metamorphosis, and the image as a whole speaks to the importance of education for black citizens as well as the difficulty in achieving it.
