Hangzhou, China

Scissors emerged in ancient China out of need to cut cotton or linen fabrics in needlework. By making two ends of an iron strip into blades and then folding it into a shape of “8” to arrange the two blades on the same side with two confronted cutting edges, ancient artisans made the first pair of scissors, which functioned by the user pressing and releasing the two blades given the elasticity of wrought iron.
This is a pair of big iron scissors of the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). It has a “8”-shaped hilt with two standard big round rings, and two blades in comparative symmetry.
