Wooden signboard with an arrow and the word "Tankstelle" painted in black on a yellow background. "Tankstelle" translates from German into "Gas Station." The signboard was found by FDR within a half hour after the Germans had evacuated an area in France, during the big Allied offensive in August 1918. At the time, FDR was Assistant Secretary of the Navy and was inspecting naval bases, etc. in France. FDR Library Museum Collection, MO 1941.13.46.
