Tanyosho pine

Often considered one of the most beautiful of all pines, this cultivated form of Japanese red pine is multi-trunked with a rounded, umbrella-like crown. Trunk and branches have unique, orange to orange-red bark which peels into thin, papery flakes. Evergreen needles are soft and slender, 3 to 5 inches long, bright to dark green with 2 needles to each bundle. This combination of distinctive form, handsome needles, and stunning bark makes Tanyosho pine a dramatic addition to any landscape. The famous grove of Tanyosho pines in the New York Botanical Garden's Ross Conifer Arboretum was planted in 1908 as small, rounded plants. Now in maturity, their orange-red bark and rounded crowns are a breath-taking sight especially on a snowy afternoon with winter sun glowing on their trunks.
