Tanzanian Banner

Migration Museum

Migration Museum
Adelaide, Australia

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Tanzanian immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
Symbols of Tanzania represent the homeland left behind: the national flag; the Tanzanian coat of arms; the Uhuru Torch symbolizing freedom and light; Mwalimu Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania; Mount Kilimanjaro; animals of Tanzania; and the people of Tanzania, who are important for the country even when they live away.
Various items symbolise Tanzanian culture, which has been brought to Australia in the hearts and minds of the community. These include: the kanga, which is a rectangular cotton cloth with multiple uses; a drum; hut; gourd; and shield.
The maps of Tanzania, Africa and Australia represent how important all these lands are to the Tanzanian community in South Australia. The Australian and Aboriginal flags are included as signs of the love and respect the Tanzanian community has for their newly-adopted nation.
The hands of friendship feature prominently as a sign of shared values between the people of Tanzania and the people of Australia.
