Target Practice is one of the most unique images in the Elizabeth Catlett's oeuvre. It is one of only a few male sculptural images that the artist created. Unlike the serene attachment between her mother and child sculptural figures. The cross-hairs on Target Practice is detached and there is a natural tension between the two opposing elements. Viewers are forced to "get out in front of" the obstructive prism or "piece" to engage with the fixated or trapped black man. The image is confrontational by design.
