Tarsia lignea con Testa di Medusa

Giuseppe Maggiolinic. 1801 - c. 1900

Reggia di Monza

Reggia di Monza
Monza, Italy

Wooden inlay with Medusa Head, in the center of an oval-shaped shield resting like a spear trophy. Two plant branches depart, the one on the left of laurel, the one on the right of oak, two frequent plants in the Napoleonic iconography, symbolizing glory and strength. The two branches unfold on a light background with respect to the oval with the Medusa, with a darker background which therefore stands out more clearly. Mainly made of boxwood and walnut of two different shades, the decorative contour parts (plant shoots, frames, corner motifs, background) are part of the usual workshop repertoire with respect to the head of the jellyfish, restoration by Luca Quartana, 1994.
