María de la Paz Jaramillo (b. 1948) or Maripaz is a Colombian visual artist. Jaramillo studied Fine Arts at the Universidad de los Andes, where she learned from prestigious Colombian artists like Luis Caballero and Juan Antonio Roda. After attaining a solid background in painting, she sought to deepen her engraving technique with Stanley William Hayter in Paris, Luis Camnitzer in Italy, and at the Chelsea School of Arts, where she learned lithography. Her work explores the life of women and the role imposed on them by society, and thematizes aspects like romance and sensuality.
Conversely to the characters in Jaramillo’s works that commonly face the viewer, the woman depicted in “Te quedarás” ('You will stay') transmits a touch of nostalgia, as she looks at a horizon that is out of sight for the viewer. The use of colors, and the simple yet effective outlining and use of textures for the female figure, make evident to the eye that a second person is emerging from the shadows behind the main character, suggesting an unfolding plot between the two.
