One of the legends related to the so called Witches Bridge says that this bridge was used to check which woman was a witch at a time when they were burned at the stake. If she was able to cross the bridge, it meant that dark powers helped her, and if not, she fell down. Another one is related to other name of this place - The Penitents' Bridge. The Legends says that the passers-by heard the sound of sweeping and sighing. This is how the legend of Tekla and Martynka was created. Tekla was a lazy witch. She did not want to marry and was forced to sweep as an eternal punishment. So, mothers began to scare their daughters, who were not willing to marry, with girls languishing on the bridge who preferred the fun and carefree life of an unmarried woman to the duties of a wife and hostess. Martynka, a little witch, wanted to help Tekla, but she herself was stuck in eternal sweeping forever.
