In 1993, Arrested Development was the first hip hop artist to win the Best New Artist GRAMMY, while the soulful and spiritual single “Tennessee” won a GRAMMY for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The Atlanta, Georgia group wanted to create uplifting, Afrocentric music that was an alternative to the popular gangsta rap genre, and their music blended instruments like harmonica and acoustic guitars with gospel-tinged vocals. Their debut, 3 Years, 5 Months, and 2 Days in the Life of..., was a hit that helped to popularize Southern hip hop.
