Tennis was introduced to America in 1874 by Staten Island socialite, Mary Outerbridge (she had learned the game while on a trip to Bermuda). Alice loved the sport and became one of the youngest and best amateur tennis players of her day, winning many prizes at the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club. She documented the sport's rise in populaty in the U.S. by photofraphing tournaments and players.
