Taranto, Italy

Polychromatic terracotta relief depicting a young boy - so called Apollo Hyakinthos - holding a lyre. Hyakinthos, handsome boy beloved of Apollo, was the object of a heroic cult in Laconia. These terracottas, serially produced from moulds and discovered in votive pits, carried symbolic meanings often alluding to the rites marking the transition between different age-groups.
