The French mechanic Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834) invented the machine that bears his name and which was presented in public in 1804 in Lyon. Coupled to a loom, it allows independent development of each of the warp yarns, which can be individually raised or not and, therefore, provides the ability to play larger and more complicated drawings than the warp machine. The Jacquard loom worked with a punch card that marked the sequence of ups and downs of the thread. This later inspired performance, with great success, perforated cards system to encode information and automate its statistical treatment.
