Claude Gellee (1600-1682) is also known as Claude Lorrain. He is considered to be one of the greatest of all landscape painters. This view featuring the Ponte Molle was painted in circa 1645. It was part of the Spanish Royal Collection captured by the Duke of Wellington from the fleeing Joseph Bonaparte after the Battle of Vitoria. The paintings were later officially given to Wellington by the King of Spain. They can now be seen at Wellington's former London home, Apsley House.
