Taking its name from the architectural term for a classical niche, this handsome alcove seat, with pedimented front flanked by Ionic columns, bears the date 1938. It was designed by Lord Gerald Wellesley (later 7th Duke of Wellington) who was an architect and also Surveyor of the King's Works of Art 1936-43
