The engineer has his head out of the window and is looking back (to the right). Behind the locomotive is a black coal car, with another engineer dressed in blue behind it. Behind the locomotive is a red coal car on a different track. On the right is a red boxcar. Two sets of tracks in front of the locomotive stretch to the lower left part of the painting.
