This scene depicts a coal locomotive on a winter evening. The sky is cloudy and overcast, however, it has an orange-ish glow to it, suggesting it is near sunset. The locomotive that is the focus of the picture faces the left, with a large black column of smoke coming out of its stack. The engineer has his head out of the window and is looking back (to the right). Behind the locomotive is a black coal car, with another engineer dressed in blue behind it. Behind the locomotive is a red coal car on a different track. On the right is a red boxcar. Two sets of tracks in front of the locomotive stretch to the lower left part of the painting.
