The Mediterranean see, a body of water surrounded by land, has influenced all civilizations that had a proximity to it, through travelling and trade and their consequent cultural exchange. The past years, it has become the "burial ground" of thousands of refugees on their attempt to cross, fleeing war and persecution. The Migrants Files state that -over 30,000 refugees and migrants died in their attempt to reach or stay in Europe since 2000.”

Alan Kurdi, a 3 year old Syrian refugee, drowned on 2 September 2015 in the Mediterranean Sea and was washed ashore.The death toll has been about 2 children per day since September 2015. Many bodies are lost at sea.
