Texas is a 1970s educational film series produced by KHOU-TV. “The Runaway Scrape,” hosted by revered Houston newsman Ron Stone, focuses on the Texas Revolution. This segment discusses the Battle of San Jacinto, with actors in traditional cloths, uniforms, and arms reenacting the attack on Mexico’s army, led by Antonio López de Santa Anna. Stone states that after preliminary attacks with the historic cannon pair, the Twin Sisters, General Sam Houston of the Texan army executed the order for ambush on April 21, 1836. San Jacinto was the shortest and bloodiest battle of the Texas Revolution. Although the Texan army was heavily outnumbered, the battle ended in heavy favor for the Texans, who suffered few casualties. The Mexican army, however, had losses close to 1,000 men in some estimates. The battle precipitated the end of the Texas Revolution and the formation of the Republic of Texas in 1836. Houston later became the first elected president of the newly formed republic.
