This landscape, based on a drawing from one of his sketchbooks, shows his attraction to the clever use of pattern and color adopted by Nabi painters Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. La Fresnaye presented the Breton houses and undulating landscape as a decorative arrangement of flat shapes and gentle harmonies of rose and gray. Within a year, the young artist's interest in form and structure would lead him to experiment with the principles of Cubism.
