The painting is one of the early works by Willmann, commissioned by the then Abbot of Lubiąż, Arnold Freiberger. It is possible that this very canvas was decisive in offering the artist who came from outside Silesia, long-term work for the Abbey and other Silesian religious fraternities. The subject of the painting is based on apocryphal stories about the concluding part of the Virgin Mary’s life, with a typically Baroque combination of Her Coronation and the Ascension to Heaven. The composition recalls the celebrated works by the Flemish Baroque masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, and is remarkable for the impressionistic, chiaroscuro painting style.
