This sculpture was extremely popular when first issued in 1867. It depicts General Ulysses Grant conferring with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and President Lincoln. Originally Stanton was also pointing toward the map but many thought it looked like he was pointing a gun at the back of Lincoln’s head. Stanton’s pose was changed to cleaning his glasses.
