The Cross

Inshō Dōmoto1954

Kyoto, Japan

A naked man and woman, with marks of nails on their hands and feet, form a cross. In the background are numerous simple crosses overlapping like grave markers. It is possible to read in this painting Adam and Eve and the Christian notion of the original sin or a symbolic presentation of human fate, in constantly bearing the cross. The male and female figures reminiscent of Picasso's figures and the Mondrian-like red, black, and blue crosses in the background account for the intensity of the plastic elements in this work.
