The Crown State Carriage

Ceremonial vehicle ordered in London for King João VI, by the Count of Póvoa, whom at that time was the Minister of the Treasury. The carriage has undergone adjustments for the crowning of King Carlos and was used for the last time in 1957 during Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Portugal.
It has a body, in Empire style, decorated small pillars covered with laurel leaves topped by small eagles, symbolic of royality. The body is entered using a step attached to each shaft.
A Royal Cown tops the roof. The interior is lined with white silk upholstered in capitonné. Safer driving with greater security is achieved by the system for attaching the body with short straps to the steel C-shaped springs, the coachman's seat raised to the level of the roof and four lanterns.
