The battle that was instigated by Prince Diponegoro in 1825 grew to become an all out war that involved the entire population. The five year war (18251830) raged on relentlessly and caused heavy casualties in the side of the Dutch troops, The war took the lives of 25,000 Dutch soldiers and cost more than 20 million Guldens. Diponegoro and his assistants, such as Mangkubumi, Kyai Modjo, Sentot Prawirodiredjo and other heroic individuals, dominated the war field In an attempt to end the war, General de Kock implemented the Benteng Stelsel (Fortification Tactics) to restrict Diponegoro’s movement and push him further South. But, this strategy proved to be failed, Under the pretense of holding a negotiation, the Dutch were able to apprehend Prince Diponegoroon March 28, 1830 in Magelang, Diponegoro passed away on January 8, 1855 in Makassar.
