Cyanobacteria in stromatolites invented photosynthesis 3.5 billion years ago, filling our planet with oxygen and causing the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE), they formed the ozone layer that protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation; and were responsible for one of the most significant changes on our planet that allowed the evolution of life become more complex.
