When the Rebellion began they both initially worked as dispatch couriers, bringing to the printers the copy for the War News, a broadsheet published by the rebel leaders during Easter Week. As the number of casualties in the GPO increased, Elizabeth and Julia found themselves aiding the wounded. When the order came to evacuate the building, three women decided to remain behind to nurse the injured. These women were Elizabeth O’Farrell, Julia Grenan and Winnie Carney.

On the morning of Friday 28th April, the final group of Volunteers left the GPO, with Connolly being carried out on a stretcher. Pearse set up a new headquarters in 16 Moore Street. Image of the surrender.
