In 1496 the Emperor Maximilian from Austria intervened on behalf of Pisa and other states and besieged Livorno (Leghorn), a Florentine stronghold. In the end, however, he was unsuccessful: not only did the Florentines withstand the siege but a heavy storm caused the sinking of the imperial fleet and forced his troops to retreat.
