Bruce Onobrakpeya, the son of an Urhobo carver, is renowned for his high-relief prints, bronzes, drawings, paintings, and installations, all inspired by West African decorative arts, philosophy, and history. While studying at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, he co-founded the Zaria Art Society. This group aimed to create a style of postcolonial Nigerian art that celebrated Pan-African folklore, motifs, and iconography. Later known as the Zaria Rebels, these artists highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural traditions and challenged the dominant idea of European supremacy in the arts.
"The Great Hunter" by Bruce Onobrakpeya is a striking art piece depicting a powerful hunter returning from his expedition, bearing fierce animals as trophies. The artwork emphasizes the hunter's formidable strength and his unyielding, merciless prowess.
