She painted not only in the Santa Fe area, but also used it as a base from which she traveled to Arizona and Utah. Born in Iowa, Van Pappelendam studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago. She taught at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1956 and at the University of Chicago from 1924 to 1948.
