Thomas Rossiter was brother-in-law to Julia Parmly Billings. He was married to her sister Anna Ehrick Parmly Rossiter, who died at a young age. It has been speculated that the central figure in the painting is Julia Billings; she holding the third child of Thomas and Anna Rossiter. The ghostly figure in the background is thought to be the deceased Anna.
