Title: "The India Lobby" ad on The Washington Post
Date: 1943-05-19
Story: The India Lobby united Indians of various classes and religions across America to fight for citizenship rights, beginning in the 1920s. They built coalitions with African Americans, with Filipinos, and with organized labor. Backed by influential writers Upton Sinclair, John Dewey, and Pearl Buck (as this 1943 Washington Post ad shows), the India Lobby was instrumental in passing the landmark 1946 Luce-Celler Act, which granted Indians the rights to citizenship and land ownership.
