On 1 July 1969, Prince Charles (1948- ) was invested as Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester by HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926). During the ceremony, in Caernarfon Castle in North Wales, the Prince was invested with the insignia of The Prince of Wales, including a gold coronet made for the occasion. In this photograph The Queen can be seen here placing the coronet on the Prince’s head during the ceremony. The Prime Minister, James Callaghan (1912-2005) stands in the background.
