On 1 July 1969, The King was invested as Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester by HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926). During the ceremony, in Caernarfon Castle in North Wales, the Prince was invested with the insignia of The Prince of Wales, including a gold coronet made for the occasion. In this photograph Queen Elizabeth II can be seen here placing the coronet on the then Prince’s head during the ceremony. The Prime Minister, James Callaghan (1912-2005) stands in the background.
