The relief depicts the rare iconography of the lament over the dead body of Simon of Trent. The fulcrum of the scene is the child’s body stretched out on a casket and surrounded by four angels (all of which originally had wings), the two at the center caught in the act of praying or singing, the other two in the act of spreading incense and of blessing the corpse. The man and woman kneeling on the sides are most probably the child’s parents.
