Battista Franco Veneziano1545–1550

The J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

This small, intricately-worked drawing is preparatory of one of the nine engravings in Franco's Life and Passion of Christ series. The lines of the composition have been incised with a stylus to transfer the design directly to the printing plate, and the resulting print is correspondingly in reverse.
