It is one of the best- known works of Vincenzo Vela. Vela presented this oeuvre at the Parisian salon in 1867, achieving wide consensus. Bonaparte is portrayed in solitude in his last exile, yet his charisma and greatness endure. The work was so convincing and intense that the Emperor himself, Napoleon III, persuaded the French state to acquire it.
