The Loyal Retainer Final Chapter: Battle without Honor and Humanity, by Mu Pan (Taichung City, Taiwan, 1976) is based on the American Civil War and other violent conflicts in the country. For him, the concept of superheroes is intensely racist, which is why the work includes a band of superheroes that confront Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces, wearing hoods reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan. Mu Pan has made the mixture of cultures his personal brand. His works present multiple narrative layers, personal reflections on human behaviour where humour and violence often come together.
