The connection of the Zollverein Coal Mine (Essen-Katernberg) and the Nordstern Coal Mine (Gelsenkirchen-Horst) was finally established. The mayors of the cities of Essen and Gelsenkirchen hung up their city coats of arms right below the city border at a depth of 1,040 metres.
