The Nanny

National Museum in Wrocław
Wrocław, Poland

The uniqueness of Boznańska’s paintings stems from their colouring – subtle, refined and somewhat blurred by their misty tonality. Owing to the characteristic way of painting which meant that by spreading a thin layer of paint, in this case directly onto cardboard, the artist achieved the effect of diffused patches of colour. Boznańska’s attention, focused mainly on the face of the female figure, makes this portrait an attempt to project her inner state and psyche.
