There was a time when black families in the North-East and Midwest of the country would be filled with apprehension about a car trip “down home”. Finding lodging or even someplace to fill the tank and use the restroom could present a real problem. Victor Green’s little guide provided a solution. Friendly service, hotels, restaurants and even night clubs on all the major and minor arteries leading to and from the old south were provided. This guide was in every African American glove compartment until the Civil Rights struggle began to bear fruit. The last guide was printed in 1966.
