Painted for Tommaso Portinari (1432-1501), director of the Bruges branch of the Medici bank, this triptych contains his portrait and those of his wife, Maria Baroncelli, and their three children on the side panels. On the verso in monochrome, the Annunciation is depicted. It was transported by sea in 1483 for the altar of the church of Sant' Egidio, annexed to the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova which was founded by the Portinari family.
