Anna Maria Closius was born in 1726 into the patrician Tartler family. She was 16 when she married the physician Stephan Closius, a future senator and a member of an important patrician family. Married for 30 years, the couple had six children. The portrait shows Anna Maria Closius at the age of 32 in a typical Saxon costume. The flowers she delicately holds between her fingers are a symbol of femininity and motherhood, while the book on the table beside her is a symbol of her education and probably a reference to her piety.
