Front view of Stradivari guitar, The Rawlins, made in Cremona, Italy, in 1700. The Rawlins guitar is one of only five documented guitars made by the famous Italian craftsman known to survive. The guitar has five double strings, typical of the 17th century, rather than the six single strings found on modern guitars. It is also smaller than today's instruments. The maple back and sides, as well as the simple, elegant decoration are innovative for the time of its construction.
