Since the time of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the Lavra has taken a leading role in the spiritual life of the country and, indeed, has become a pillar of the government and the people. According to one contemporary, Sergius with his “quiet and gentle words” could influence the fiercest and most hardened hearts. For example, he brought together the warring princes, persuading them to obey the Grand Prince of Moscow.
