In 1505 the Florentine troops led by Ercole Bentivoglio attacked Pisa’s troops near the Tower of San Vincenzo. The battle had an uncertain outcome until the Florentine decided to position six falconet (small caliber) cannons within their battery, unleashing an assault on their enemies from all sides, “with light horses along the coastline, heavy artillery down the main road and infantry along the forest above”.
