Corfe Castle sits on a natural hilltop. Its origins date to the late 11th century, although it may have been built on an earlier, pre-Conquest site. The castle was altered and enlarged in the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, and its keep was refurbished as a house in the mid 16th century. Following the Civil War, the castle was slighted and largely destroyed.
