The Selk'nam, (sometimes written Selknam or Shelknam), usually known as the Ona, are an indigenous group of South America, although now integrated into wider society, from the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia, that the Selk'nam called Karukinká. The name Ona comes from the Yaghan language and has prevailed over Selk'nam, which was how they referred to themselves. Before their near mass extinction, they lived as nomadic hunters and gatherers.
