The Sentry

A soldier sits in the sun on a bench near a gateway,
being attentively scrutinised by a dog. A seemingly everyday scene, it
nevertheless may contain some deeper meaning. The clear illumination, the
complex structure of space, and the handling of the paint with its broad range
of luminous values and broad brush strokes can later be recognised in
the works of other Delft painters, most notably Jan Vermeer.
