Krieghoff, one the most popular painters in mid-19th century Canada, is widely known for his landscapes and genre scenes. He settled in Montreal in 1846, advertising himself as a professional artist. The following year he joined the Shakspeare Club (sic) and painted this group portrait, where he appears in the background smoking a pipe. This painting was unknown until the Museum acquired it in the year 2000.
