Medicinal spa waters were discovered in Scarborough in the early 17th century. A spa culture developed and, together with the popularity of sea bathing, placed Scarborough at the forefront of seaside health resorts. A new spa building was built on the seafront in 1858 and was later restored and enlarged following a fire. As well as for the benefit of visitors' health, the Spa was a place of entertainment and included a bandstand and a ballroom.
